Science Snoops - The Case of the Missing Monarchs (CD-ROM)
This interactive CD-ROM and teacher's guide, designed for grades 6-8, gives students the task of investigating why the population of monarch butterflies is in danger. Students use mathematics to perform an inquiry-based science investigation on a computer. They begin by viewing videos of a butterfly's life cycle, its food sources, and its larvae. The video clips help students recognize and analyze alternative explanations and predictions.
Students click on virtual samples to measure and record larvae weight, butterfly weight, and wing length. They determine the effects of pesticides, herbicides, weather conditions, parasites, and infections by viewing images of butterfly scales and milkweed leaves under a microscope.
Biotechnology and entomology experts explain some of the factors that threaten monarchs in their breeding habitats and wintering sites.
Students keep science journals to gather, analyze, and interpret data. The journals are intended to teach students to communicate scientific procedures and explanations as if they were presenting their reports to a client.
The teacher's guide contains a sample journal that serves as an example for assessing students' journal entries, and reproducibles provide students with an outline to follow when writing their entries. A chart identifies what segments of the activity correlate to specific National Science Education Standards. |
